In this weeks video health tip, Dr. Samir Hajariwala, director of Crossroads Chiropractic, takes a look at why high blood sugar after meals is a good predictor for heart disease, strokes, and diabetes.
Over 30% of type II diabetics (those who can’t metabolize sugar well) do not realize they are diabetic because their fasting blood sugar levels are normal at less than 100/mg/dL and their doctor has told them they are not diabetic.
If their fasting blood sugar level is between 100 and 125 mg/dL they are usually told they are pre-diabetic when in fact they are already at high risk for a heart attack.
Most type II diabetes can be prevented or corrected with lifestyle changes:
1. weight loss if overweight
2. exercise
3. avoid smoking
4. avoid or severely restrict alcohol
5. eat a healthful diet with plenty of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, nuts and other seeds.
6. avoid sugared drinks including fruit juices, sugar-added foods and other refined carbohydrates.
7. avoid red meat, processed meats, and fried foods.
